Don’t Make Life Easy For Car Thieves by Phil Adams-Wright
Our cars are many drivers’ pride and joy and, outside property, often one of the most expensive purchases made in our lifetimes. Some car owners like to personalise and add additional functionality to their vehicle by upgrading or modifying it and the last thing they want to happen is for their car to be broken into or stolen.
It is important then that we make sure our car is firstly secure, but secondly it’s also important to ensure the car doesn’t pose any unnecessary attractions to thieves. This can be done via a number of different ways, essentially making sure your car doesn’t stand out may well help in reducing the odds of you becoming a victim of car crime.
First of all an alarm and immobiliser often come standard with new cars and it is important to make sure these are working and active whenever you leave your vehicle. An alarm will mean that thieves may attract unwanted attention if they tried to break into your car. An immobiliser should ensure the car will not start unless the correct key is used.
Removing any parts of your car stereo that can be detached is a good idea also. Most stereo head units will not work unless the corresponding facia is attached. If this is not present then the thief may well walk on by. If you do remove a head unit cover then make sure you take the cover with you and not store it in the vehicle, an enterprising thief will know to check the glove box and other common stashing points.
Likewise any satellite navigation units should be removed every time you leave the car, as well as any harness or cradles that would indicate there is a chance the unit could have been left within the car somewhere. Another small detail thieves look for is the mark left on windshields from suction cups from satellite navigation cradles. Having a cloth handy to clear the window of any telltale marks will help reduce the attraction here.
It’s also been advised not to leave valuables in plain sight such as parcels, handbags and laptop computers. If a thief sees any of these on a passenger seat it is an invitation to them to smash the window, grab the goods and disappear all within the space of a few seconds. Either keep valuables on you or locked away out of sight in the car boot. If you have to keep valuables in your boot then check you are not being watched just in case there is anyone around hoping to find where you hide all the goods.
There are other benefits of actively taking measures to reduce the risk of car crime. An alarm or immobiliser may help You Get a lower insurance premium than without these features.
